Calab is one of the founding members of the firm. He currently heads the Patent practice in the firm’s Gurgaon office. He has extensive experience of nearly 35 years in handling all aspects of patent prosecution and enforcement.

Calab has been involved in several complex patent litigations matters. As legal counsel to the Government of India, he advised and guided the Government through the entire process of revocation of the ‘turmeric’ and ‘Basmati’ patents before the USPTO. He has advised the Government of India on various IP issues including those relating to international negotiations in respect of the Patent Law Treaty and Patent Co-operation Treaty and was part of the Parliamentary Committee that drafted the 2008 amendments to the Indian Patents Act.

Calab regularly appears before the Indian Patent Office, Intellectual Property Appellate Board and various District and High Courts as well as the Supreme Court of India.

Calab has authored several articles and is a regular speaker at various professional international and national conferences and seminars.

Prior to joining the firm, Calab worked as a Patent attorney in two prominent IPR firms in New Delhi.

Database and Technology

K&S has an in-house database of all published and advertised Trade Marks in India since 1940, which enables it to search and provide a search report, including that for a proprietor search and device search, within one working day. There is also a separate database of published and registered geographical indications with the Geographical Indications Registry.K&S also has a similar database comprising all Indian patent applications published since 1980. The patent database enables search for published patent applications with reference to various fields including inventor’s names, patent application number, patent number or the applicant’s name and/or the title of the patent application. It also provides limited information in respect of pending applications which are open to the public.K&S also has a Document Management System (DMS) which digitizes and stores all hard copy correspondence with its clients and the Indian IP offices enabling it to move towards a paperless office. K&S operates on an ERP application which integrates all its functional processes including databases, processes, billing and time records and also provides a firm-wide web enable environment to run its business and backend operations. The firm is familiar with electronic billing systems which many of its clients prefer to use.
