You’d think being in the drivers seat of our Litigation team would keep Ian busy enough, but he’s also the General Editor of New Zealand’s leading text on intellectual property law, James & Wells Intellectual Property Law in New Zealand, immediate past-President of the New Zealand Institute of Patent Attorneys, on hiatus as Managing Partner of the firm and on the Board of one of New Zealand’s leading manufacturers of machines for heavy industry. Yeesh.

You don’t get a CV like Ian’s without pulling some long hours. But all work and no play makes Ian a dull boy, so he loves hanging out with his little girl, mountain biking, fishing and car restoring. Yep, he’s just restored a 1961 Series II Sunbeam Alpine convertible to its former glory and is starting work on a 1955 Buick Riviera Special. Keep an eye out for them next time you’re cruising around the Tron.

Patents – clever product or service

Clever new products and processes are the backbone of our business and this country’s economy.

Naturally we have diverse backgrounds in science and technology.

More importantly we know how to craft patent specifications to capture opportunities beyond the immediate invention.

And, because we act for numerous Kiwi exporters, we are familiar with international patent law and have established a significant network of associates around the globe. This means we draft patent specifications to international standards and develop filing strategies tailored to your business needs.

Let’s face it, we’re geeks with the tools of international law and business.

Perfect partners to take your ideas further.

We are not just about intellectual property, patents, trade marks, designs, commercialisation and litigation. We understand business and maximise the value of our client’s innovation in
New Zealand and globally.

James & Wells is the number one choice for Kiwi innovators. Why are we so passionate? Well, it’s sad but true, historically Kiwis haven’t made the most of their great ideas. Maybe because most people don’t realise that 80% of the value of their business is in intangible assets.

This is why we have focused our firm on helping our clients make the most of these valuable assets.

So yes, we’re intellectual property experts, but we are also business strategists, scientists, engineers, accountants, lawyers and commercialisation specialists. We’re all committed to the same goal – making sure Kiwi innovation makes it big on the world stage.

Talk to us to see how we can help.
